Olympic Games
The
tradition of Olympic Games was back to ancient Greece . We know that the
first Olympic Games took place in the town of Olympia more than 2,700 years ago.
There was no wars in the
country for these five days when sports competitions took place. It was a great athletic festival of wrestling, foot-racing,
discus throwing and others. Poets
recited poems, singers sang hymns, dancers danced, and orators pronounced
speeches - all this in honour of the
sacred Games.
Only men
could take part in the Olympics. Women were not allowed even to watch
the competitions at the stadium under the fear of death penalty. There was a
single exception, when a woman coached her son and accompanied him to the stadium in men's
clothes. That brave woman was spared to penalty because her son excelled in many events. But from that time all
athletes and their coaches had to
compete without any clothes on.
The
games were organised and held up to the year of 393. Then, for more than 1.700 years nothing more was heard of the
Olympiads.
The
first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. They take place every fourth year. The Games cannot take place in the country, which is
at war. That's why there were no Olympic Games during the two World
Wars. Winter sports made their Olympic debut
in 1908 when figure-skating was included
into the Olympic programme among summer sports (athletic, swimming, gymnastics, weightlifting, wrestling, tennis,
fencing, cycling, shooting). At the
winter Olympic Games many teams from different countries take part in
competitions in
figure-skating, skiing, freestyle, ice-hockey and other winter sports. The
Olympics are very popular all over the world.
